Was chatting with Dave at Ballykelly the day before he was murdered. A really nice guy and who left a young family behind…whilst those in charge were allowed to walk free and take up the role of politicians… the world is certainly upside down…
I was in training with David in 1966 and served with him in Maidstone until 1969 =. I met up with David in 1976 in Londonderry he was on an Engineer tour I was just finishing an Infantry tour, we had a chat and I was horrified to learn on my return from leave that he had been killed, I am pleased to hear that the man who ordered his death has now met his
Dave was my section Cpl when I went to 59 Commando Squadron, RE in 1971. He was my best friend, the best man when I got married. I still miss him greatly.
Hope you can clear up a mystery for me. David’s name has been added onto the roll of honour in Holy Trinity Church, Dilton Marsh, Westbury, Wiltshire. However, it has just be added in a temporary fashion at the bottom, and it wasn’t until today that I learned more about him from someone who has done a bit of research. I understand his parents may have lived in the village at some point, but we are not sure if David was born here or ever lived here. If he did, some of us feel that his name should be added permanently to the memorial. Can you give me a bit more detail about him?
Served with Dave in 59 cdo RE in NI and Iserlohn, was in NI when he was Killed, my troop SGT in Iserlohn, section Cpl in 59, good mate and solid, RIP Mucker.
For those unaware, David was the subject of a 1974 BBC documentary that can be found on YouTube (At least for now) under the name of “Bomb Disposal Men – Northern Ireland”

Was there another Sgt Evans 59 Commando Engineers that was on that same NI tour in 1976?
