Shot by sniper while on British Army (BA) mobile patrol, Falls Road, Belfast.
An ex UDR officer, he was shot by terrorists whilst travelling aboard a landrover returning from visiting a wounded soldier in the Royal Victoria Hospital on the Falls Road, Belfast. He was on a liaison visit with the Royal Anglian Regiment at the time.
I remember Paul very well indeed – he was a teacher at King Williams College on the Isle of Man for a couple of years whilst I was a boarder. He was a breath of fresh air – he rock climbed and used to abseil out of his room on the top floor (much to our amusement) knowing he could get away with it as “the prune” (principal Fees-Jones) was ex-marines and did cliff assault training. He enjoyed sailing and used to crew for me. What none would know is he loved growing things – he gave us some wonderful plants that still live in the garden after all these years. Unconventional and sadly missed – here I am forty years later remembering this. I just wish I knew where his memorial is to pop a flow from one of his plants in the garden on.
Paul was also a teacher at my school, St Edmund’s College, Hertfordshire. It was a shock when he didn’t return for classes, and the Headmaster had to explain to us what had happened to him.?
Dunno why he popped into my head today, but glad there is some record of him online.
RIP Mr Rogers!
