He was killed during a follow-up operation after an Army post at Kitchen Hill in Lurgan came under IRA mortar bomb attack. Two devices were launched at the base and exploded. The Army said little damage was caused and no-one was injured. Soldiers reacted swiftly to the attack and found the firing point, as well as a third mortar which had failed to fire. Sergeant Hills, a bomb-disposal officer, was brought to the scene to try and make the device safe.
As he attempted to remove the shell from the home-made mortar tube it detonated, killing him instantly.
