Malcolm Banks, 29-years-old, married with 2 children and a soldier with the Royal Engineers holding the rank of Staff Sergeant was fatally injured in the Short Strand district when he was fatally injured 4 minutes before midnight when an IRA ceasefire was to come into effect. SSGT. Banks was travelling in a Land Rover that had come under fire at the junction of Seaford and Comber Streets. The Land Rover sped off when 3 shots were fired at it. The patrol commander, a Captain, said later that they didn’t realise SSGT. Banks was wounded until they reached the base. SSGT. Banks died at 12:05AM.
